Electric
This project will help de-mystify the magic of electric circuits, magnetism, motors and electronics.
Electric, Level 1
In level one, youth learn about the uses of electricity, selecting appropriate materials for their electric project, how to build a flashlight or switch, test conductivity, investigate circuits, test materials for magnetism, build and test a compass, build an electromagnet, build a galvanometer and build an electric motor.
Complete at least three required activities, four optional activities and at least two leadership experiences. It may take three years to complete the level.
Electric, Level 2
At this level, youth participate in activities on Ohm’s Law using a squirt bottle and a Volt-Ohm meter, reading circuit diagrams, building a circuit and measuring voltages. Youth will also build a momentary switch and use it to communicate in Engineering and Technology | 23 Morse code, build a three-way switch, solder connections, build a rocket launcher and build a burglar alarm.
Complete at least three required activities, four optional activities and at least two leadership experiences. It may take three years to complete the level.
Electric, Level 3
At this level, youth assemble a basic electrical tool and supply kit, interview an electrical inspector, learn about electrical codes, read an electric meter and electric service panels, and decipher the symbols on wires and cables. Youth will also be able to select appropriate light bulbs for different situations, learn how to read an appliance nameplate, measure the electrical usage of appliances, test for voltage, determine whether outlets are grounded, locate their home wiring system, replace a switch and identify what’s on each circuit.
Complete at least three required activities, four optional activities and at least two leadership experiences. It may take three years to complete the level.
Electric, Level 4
Level four encourages youth to move beyond basic electricity, explore electronics and discover the basics of solid-state electronics. Youth will learn about diodes, transistors, LEDs, photocells, SCRs, ICs and amplifiers.
Complete at least three required activities, four optional activities and at least two leadership experiences. It may take three years to complete the level.
