4-H MARKET BEEF RULES
- Age of Exhibitor - - A 4-H member must be eleven (11) years old by Oct. 1, 2023 to carry a Market Beef Project.
- Entries are limited to market steers or spayed heifers, 18 months old or less. (Born after January 1, 2023)
- Please check your Market Beef for horns. Small, loose, moveable scurs are acceptable. Sharp, pointed horns or horns over one inch in length will not be allowed.
- Market Beef must have been tagged and tattooed in the right ear, brand inspected (fees to be paid by member) and weighed at the Valley County 4-H fall scheduled weigh-in/tag-in day of the current 4-H year. Members can tag up to 2 (two) beef, but only 1 (one) can be entered as a 4-H Market Beef.
- At entry day weigh-in, Market Beef are required to weigh a minimum of 950 pounds to be eligible to show in the market class and sell at the Valley County 4-H & FFA Livestock Sale. A feeder class will be created for market beef projects which do not make weight.
- Animals must have been fed by exhibitor at least by January 1, of the current year.
- Market Beef will not be unloaded from trailers at the scale. They must be unloaded away from the scale then led to the scale. (Ex. unloaded at the beef barn).
- The metal 4-H ID tags in the steers are very durable; however, if your animal has lost one, you need to notify the County Agent as soon as possible.
- Any market Beef that does not have a 4-H ID tag or tattoo will be disqualified from live judging, showmanship, the Valley County 4-H & FFA Livestock Sale and Carcass Contest. You may choose to enter your market steer in Open Class.
- A signed Bill of Sale (which may be the brand inspection slip) must be presented to the Beef Superintendent along with $2.00 ($1.00 Brand Inspection Fee, $1.00 Beef Council Fee), when the Market Beef is weighed in at the fair.
- Market Beef will be divided into weight classes by the Beef Superintendents after they have been weighed in.
- All Market Beef will be tied firmly with not too long a lead rope and to ensure extra safety - - they will also be tied with a neck rope.
- Refer to overall livestock exhibit rules, livestock building rules, livestock sale rules, large animal showmanship rules and 4-H Code of Ethics.
- All entries will be veterinarian inspected entry day.
- Beef to be trained to be handled by halter & show stick.

Showmanship shall precede the live animal evaluation. Senior members show first, followed by junior, and then pre-junior show people.
The top two (2) beef animals in each weight division will compete against each other for the Overall Grand and Reserve Champion Market Beef. Each of whom receive a rosette.
The Overall Grand Champion and the Overall Reserve Champion will receive special rosettes.
BREEDING BEEF RULES:
- All breeding beef to be in the possession of the exhibitor by May 15, current year. The exhibitor to be the primary caretaker and trainer.
- A 4-H member who is: 4-H age as of October 1, 2023, may enroll in Breeding Beef and/or Dairy Cattle. If exhibiting at the fair an animal can be shown in the pen or shown at halter. However, the Beef Superintendent has the right to disallow an exhibitor from showing at halter, if it is deemed the exhibitor cannot handle the animal in a safe and satisfactory manner. NOTE: Pre-Junior will be limited to showing at halter a yearling heifer or an either sex calf.
- Breeding Beef projects will be exhibited only - - they cannot be sold at the Valley County 4-H & FFA Livestock Sale.
- Refer to overall livestock exhibit rules, livestock building rules, livestock sale rules, large animal showmanship rules and 4-H Code of Ethics.
- All entries will be veterinarian inspected entry day.

ZMB - Class 25 - Crossbred
NOTE: Class 25, Crossbred - Exhibitor may enter more than one entry in “Crossbred” provided the cross breeding is not duplicated.

- Dam and daughter - any age - must be shown in individual classes first (cannot be the same animals exhibited in lot 11.)
