PAAC Minutes - January 17, 2020

ITEM No.1 – Old Items
- Frank Ahl and Lyle Schwabauer were informed that the committee denied placement of a second bobcat bronze at the Bobcat Athletic Complex and that an alternate location in front of the Fitness Center was a possibility.
- Lisa Verwys can assess Russell Chatham paintings and provide a conditions report. Appraisals will need to be handled by a consultant.
- A exhibition on campus in the Spring to coincide with Yellowstone Art Museums Russell Chatham expo was discussed.
Action Item: Discuss possible future placement of proposed bronze statue in February.
Action Item: Courtney will follow up with Lisa Verwys to provide a Conditions Assessment for the Chatham paintings.
Action Item: Megan will contact Yellowstone Art Museum to find out dates of their Chatham expo.
ITEM No.2 – Montana Arts Council Partnership
Presenter – Jaclyn Liebscher
- Kristin Han Burgoyne, the new Grants Director and Accessibility Coordinator for the Montana Arts Council, is interested in forming a partnership with the University to provide additional support during RFP/RFQ processes along with social media outreach to obtain a broader depth.
Action Item: Jaclyn will give Courtney contact information for Kristin to connect during her upcoming visit for Romney Hall.
ITEM No.3 – AIH Public Art Updates
Presenter – Melissa Ragain
- An image of the areas selected to display public art was presented.
- A mid-west artist, Stacia Goodman, will represent the ‘Fire & Water’ elements with mosaic tiles on a two-foot by 16 foot-tall column at the interior of the South Main Entrance. Details continue to be coordinated.
- Two 8x10-foot murals will be painted by Robert Martinez outside the entrance on each side of the Student Commons. The murals will represent the ‘Past and Present’ by featuring images of Native American University students in garb relating to construction and nursing areas of study.
- 4x6 foot ledger with an overlay of images also created by Robert Martinez will be displayed on two walls leaving the Student Commons. This art contains elements of humor and symbolizes a connection to place. Details continue to be discussed including the possibility of using imagery of actual MSU students.
- A 26 foot-wide single-sided warrior shirt built by Bently Spang from 26 LCD TV screens and mounted on an armature to the wall, will be installed in a recess in the southwest end of the gallery. The piece will face south and be visible through the windows upon approach from the Student Union Building.
- Maintenance considerations and coordination efforts are underway with a University AV group.
- Video footage will be filmed in Montana by the artist.
- Accessibility concerns and design issues are also being discussed.
- The Drum Room walls will be baffled with a recycled aspen bark material that can be painted. A conversation was solicited regarding the potential for a student driven art project in the location.
Action Item: Jaci will follow up and ensure Robert Martinez has contact information for access to archived ledger maps.
Action Item: John will follow up with Terry regarding the possibility of a tuition waiver for a student driven art project in the Drum Room.
ITEM No.4 – BAC Public Art Subcommittee – Final Five Artists

Artists:
- Jenny Holzer- LED text-based lighting, displays on buildings, projection
- Jeffrey Gibson- beaded Everlast bags (suggest acquiring)
- Tatsuo Miyajma- LED programmed number-based lighting
- Ivan Navarro- one-way mirrors, infinite spaces, optical illusions, engaging
- Hank Willis Thomas- sports monuments using resin
- Input given regarding proposed locations for the public art
Action Item: Melissa and Jaclyn to define scope for public art piece. Action Item: Subcommittee to meet again and discuss contacting Hank Willis Thomas and Jeffrey Gibson.
