Adding or Dropping a Class
After receiving a registration PIN from their advisors, students can generally manage their enrollment through MyMSU and CatCourse Scheduler (for more information, please visit the Registration Information website). If you need to add a course after the 5th day of classes please follow the add instructions below. If you need to drop courses after the 10th day of courses please follow the drop instructions below.

How to Add a Class
Sometimes students need instructor approval to add a class. Instructors can authorize an override of a pre-requisite, course cap or time conflict. They may also authorize a student to add their course between the 6th through the 10th day of a typical semester. Details on the add processes can be found below.
Adding a course for Consent of Instructor, Pre-Requisite, course capcaity, or time conflict or between the 6th and 10th day of classes:
- Look up the instructor’s email using the directory (located on the right-hand side at the very top of montana.edu).
- If you need to locate instructor information, find the class on the Schedule of Classes.
- Send the instructor of the course an email, requesting to permission to be added into their section.
- If the instructor approves, they can submit an add request to the Registrar’s Office through MyMSU. The Registrar’s Office will process the request and you will be notified via email that you have been added to the class.
- If the instructor does not approve, work with your advisor to find an alternative class.
In the case of an extraordinary circumstance, a student may appeal to add a course after the 10th class day via an Add/Drop for extrordinary circumstance via DocuSign, please utilize DocuSign to initiate this process.
- Please note "Assistant Dean of College" refers to the Assistant Dean of your Academic College, not the Dean of Students. Please note add/drops via DocuSign take 3-5 business days to process once the DocuSign form has been completed.
How to Drop a Class
To drop a class from the 6th through the 59th day of the typical semester, students need to consult an advisor. If dropping to zero credits, fill out the university withdrawal request form online. Details on the drop processes can be found below.
- Dropping Start with your assigned academic advisor, unless your department has shared a different process with you.
- If you have recently changed majors or are unable to connect with your advisor, find an advisor through Advising Commons.
- Graduate students should reach out to their home department to confirm their advisor.
- Students must receive advisor approval. It is important that you reach out to them well in advance of the deadline to ensure you have time to complete the withdraw before the deadline.
- Send your advisor an email, schedule an appointment, stop by during drop in hours to requesting to be dropped from your course.
- If approved, they will submit a drop request to the Registrar's Office through MyMSU. The Registrar's office will process the request and you will be notified via email that you have been dropped from the course.
In the case of an extraordinary circumstance, a student may appeal to drop a course during 61st through 70th class day via an Add/Drop for extrordinary circumstance via DocuSign, please utilize DocuSign to initiate this process.
