Registration Errors

If the system indicates that you have a Hold on your account that prevents registration, log into MyInfo and click on "Student Services," "Student Records," and "View Holds."  You must resolve the Hold in order to register for classes.

  • This means the section of the class you are attempting to register for is reserved for a specific class (freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior students only- based on earned credits at the time of registration).  
  • To resolve this error, remove the course from your summary queue (set action to “remove” and click “submit.”)  Return to CatCourse Scheduler by navigating back to MyMSU, open on a previous browser tab, and selecting “CatCourse Scheduler” from the “CatCourse Registration” card. 
  • Click “Continue Planning Schedule” to adjust your classes. 
  • Click the gear icon labeled “Sections” associated with the class you’re trying to register for. This will bring up all available sections. Uncheck any sections that have a note restricting class and click “Save & Close.” 
  • Click “Generate Schedules” to see all available options without class restrictions. 
  • This means the section of the class you are attempting to register for is reserved for a specific major (Example: Graphic Design students only)  
  • To resolve this error, remove the course from your summary queue (set action to “remove” and click “submit.”)  Return to CatCourse Scheduler by navigating back to MyMSU, open on a previous browser tab, and selecting “CatCourse Scheduler” from the “CatCourse Registration” card. 
  • Click “Continue Planning Schedule” to adjust your classes. 
  • Click the gear icon labeled “Sections” associated with the class you’re trying to register for. This will bring up all available sections. Uncheck any sections that have a note restricting major and click “Save & Close.” 
  • Click “Generate Schedules” to see all available options without major restrictions. 
  • This means the section of the class you are attempting to register for is reserved for Gallatin College (or MSU students if you’re a Gallatin College student) or students whose program is exclusively online. 
  • To resolve this error, remove the course from your summary queue (set action to “remove” and click “submit.”)  Return to CatCourse Scheduler by navigating back to MyMSU, open on a previous browser tab, and selecting “CatCourse Scheduler” from the “CatCourse Registration” card. 
  • Click “Continue Planning Schedule” to adjust your classes. 
  • At the top of page, you’ll see “Campuses- 2 of 3 selected.”  Click change to select the correct campus (Gallatin College for Gallatin College students). 
  • Click Save 
  • Click “Generate Schedules” to see all available options without campus restrictions. 
  • This means you must receive approval from the instructor of the course before you can register. 
  • To resolve this error, remove the course from your summary queue (set action to “remove” and click “submit.”)   
  • Look up the instructor’s email using the directory (located on the right-hand side at the very top of montana.edu). 
  • Send the instructor of the course an email, requesting to permission to be added into their section. 
  • If the instructor approves, they can submit an add request to the Registrar’s Office through MyMSU.  The Registrar’s Office will process the request and you will be notified via email that you have been added to the class. 
  • If the instructor does not approve, work with your advisor to find an alternative class. 
  • This means you must receive approval from the academic department offering the course before you can register. 
  • To resolve this error, remove the course from your summary queue (set action to “remove” and click “submit.”)   
  • Search for the department in the search box on montana.edu 
  • Most departments have their contact information at the bottom of their webpage. 
  • Call the department and request approval to be added to the course. 
  • If the department approves, they can submit an add request to the Registrar’s Office through MyMSU.  The Registrar’s Office will process the request, and you will be notified via email that you have been added to the class. 
  • If the department does not approve, work with your advisor to find an alternative class. 
  • This means the class you are attempting to register for requires you to take another class before you can successfully register. For example, you must take CHMY 121 and CHMY 122 before you can register for CHMY 123 and CHMY 124. 
  • To resolve this error, remove the course from your summary queue (set action to “remove” and click “submit.”)   
  • You must provide proof you have completed the pre-requisite by submitting all official transcripts or obtain instructor approval to register for the course without completing the pre-requisite.  
  • If the instructor approves, they can submit an add request to the Registrar’s Office through MyMSU.  The Registrar’s Office will process the request, and you will be notified via email that you have been added to the class. 
  • If the instructor does not approve, register for the required pre-requisite course. 
  • This means the section you are attempting to register for requires you to take an additional specific class at the same time (Example: some sections of WRIT 101W require you to register for WRIT 001 at the same time). 
  • To resolve this error, remove the course from your summary queue (set action to “remove” and click “submit.”)  Return to CatCourse Scheduler by navigating back to MyMSU, open on a previous browser tab, and selecting “CatCourse Scheduler” from the “CatCourse Registration” card. 
  • Click “Continue Planning Schedule” to adjust your classes. 
  • Click “Add Course” to add the co-requisites course to your potential schedule. Once added, click “Return to Generate Schedule 
  • Click “Generate Schedules” to see all available options without class restrictions. 
  • This means the class you are attempting to register for has a 0-credit lab or recitation component (Example: ARTH 200 IA 4-credit lecture must be registered for at the same time as ARTH 200IA 0-credit recitation) 
  • This error can be avoided by ensuring all courses under the “Plans” tab are added to your registration queue by selecting “Add All.” 
  • Click “Submit” to Register. 

 

*Please note: There is a message on the add/drop page regarding dropping to zero credits.  It is not an error, it is there for informational purposes.
