Home Performance & Energy Retrofit Bootcamp
Course Description
This course provides an overview of energy retrofit and weatherization measures and standards related to the thermal envelope, as well as residential building performance practices including building science basics and the house as a system. The course will cover basic health and safety issues, pressure diagnostics, air-sealing, insulation installations, moisture management, window and door installation, roof vent installation, assessment, troubleshooting, and improvement of mechanical systems such as furnaces, boilers, domestic hot water systems, and ventilation systems.
Part of the course will focus on building assessment and will introduce students to the residential energy auditing process with special attention to the diagnostic tests and inspection process leading to a professional assessment of a building. Thermal imaging is an important skill for every level of the home performance and building industry from energy auditors to builders to electricians, HVAC, and plumbers. Students will learn Infrared theory, an understanding of heat flow, how to get accurate temperature measurements, camera controls and care of cameras.
Remodel work and home performance upgrades done with energy efficiency in mind could improve overall occupant health when done in a mindful way. The course will take your home remodel and home performance work to the next level by learning how to integrate healthy housing principles into your work including working safe when disturbing lead paint.
Upon completion of this course students will be highly qualified to apply for jobs in the Weatherization programs anywhere in the country. There are currently 8,500 people working in Weatherization. This course will also give students the skills necessary to pursue energy retrofit work as a contractor or employee of a building contractor that specializes in this work.

Course Schedule
The course will be Monday-Friday from 8:00-5:00 onMay 12-23, 2025.
Course Location
Most of the course will take place at the Weatherization Training Center at 751 Osterman Dr. Ste. 101 in Bozeman. Some of the course may take place at the Gallatin College HVAC and Carpentry space on East Frontage Road.
Course Cost
This course is free for Montana residents and Gallatin College students. Course attendees may be responsible for some material costs.
