This award is designed to honor individuals at Montana State University who have made significant contributions to academic advising. This award will closely follow the National Academic Advising Association’s core values and the criteria for their national outstanding advising award.

To be eligible, an individual must be either a current tenure track or non-tenure track faculty and have been employed at MSU- Bozeman for a minimum of three years. Not eligible are current members of the selection committee and previous winners of the award.

• Commitment to engage in developmental advising as compared to prescriptive advising.

Description

Created in 1986, the award recognizes faculty who demonstrate outstanding achievement in incorporating varied perspectives in the curriculum or developing programs that contribute to the elimination of persistent barriers to the success of faculty on campus. The award also honors the memory of Betty Coffey, a faculty member in Computer Science from 1977 to 1984, for her considerable contribution to faculty development and teaching excellence at MSU.

Selection Criteria

• Research and scholarship leading to the creation of a new course or the substantial alteration of an existing course in order to provide a focus on varied issues. It is expected that the new or revised course will reflect new insights gleaned from active scholarship that challenge the ways in which knowledge has been presented in the past. 

• The development of a program that results in the elimination of barriers to the success of faculty on campus. Research leading to programs designed to enhance the participation of faculty in a discipline or field should reach a significant number of students or show potential for continuing impact.

Description

This award is intended to recognize the extraordinary efforts by a faculty member in mentoring research associates, and/or faculty at MSU. In particular it aims to distinguish someone who has mentored junior faculty members both prior to and beyond tenure. The award will be presented to an individual who has contributed substantially to the career development of one or more faculty member at MSU. 

Purpose

Successful mentoring is a crucial dimension of developing and retaining faculty members. Ongoing mentoring relationships contribute to the happiness and success of female faculty members by helping them negotiate the promotion and tenure process and the path to full professor, by encouraging their research and teaching activities, and providing support and role models for healthy work-life integration. This award is a way in which to formally celebrate the commitment by some of our senior faculty and staff to the mentorship of students, staff, research associates, and junior faculty members, as part of their formal and informal service activities to the university.

What is a mentor? 

A mentor is a person who creates a supportive environment that fosters a protégée’s realization of long- and short-term professional and life goals. A mentor helps facilitate access to institutional resources, helps a protégée develop a network of relationships that can contribute to her success, and guides successful navigation of the university system. Mentoring plays an important role not only in promoting the success of individual students, staff, research associates, and faculty members, but also in fostering community among scholars at Montana State University.

Selection Criteria

• Evaluation of the nominee’s mentoring activities and skills, especially regarding their support for junior faculty members, both prior to and beyond tenure.
• Criteria for selecting the honoree will include depth (i.e. profound efforts and effects), breadth (e.g., mentoring multiple faculty members, and effectiveness (e.g., successfully mentoring faculty with career obstacles) of mentoring efforts.

Description

Honoring outstanding faculty in the sciences who have excelled in their research accomplishments, teaching and mentorship, and contributions to the state of Montana and/or Montana State University.

In 2012, Montana State University received an ADVANCE-Institutional Transformation grant from the National Science Foundation. These grants are aimed at broadening, supporting, and recognizing the participation of faculty in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and the social and behavioral sciences (SBS). Montana State University has therefore established this award to support and recognize our outstanding faculty in these fields.

This award honors outstanding faculty in the sciences who have excelled in their research accomplishments, teaching and mentorship, and contributions to the state of Montana and/or Montana State University.

The winner will be encouraged to give one public lecture on the value and contribution of diversity to their scholarship and experiences and will serve as a voice and role model for others on campus via participation in one or two panel discussions and workshops each year for two years.

Anyone may nominate tenured faculty in Life, Natural, Engineering, and Social Sciences. Nominees should have achieved the rank of Full Professor.  Faculty with administrative components to their appointment (Deans, Dept Heads etc) are eligible for nomination.

Selection Criteria

Selection will be based on candidates’ achievements and activities regarding research, teaching/mentorship, and service. The following guidelines apply to the nomination and selection process:

Each Dean may nominate one faculty member from the College. The Dean of Letters and Science may nominate two candidates: one from Letters and one from Science. Nomination materials should include a current curriculum vitae and a letter of endorsement (not to exceed two pages) from the Dean which highlights the nominee’s contribution to graduate research/creativity mentoring.

All faculty who have held a faculty appointment at MSU for at least 5 years are eligible.

Selection criteria will include:

• Number of graduate students mentored as major professor, and their success.
• Number of research or creative collaborations with graduate students at MSU.

• Each Dean may nominate one faculty member.  The Dean of Letters and Science may nominate two candidates: one from Letters and one from Science.  
• One award may be given.

Description

The award is designed to honor faculty who have incorporated outstanding innovative teaching practices into their classes at Montana State University.

Eligibility

To be eligible, individuals must be current tenure track or non-tenure track faculty who have completed a minimum of three years of teaching at MSU- Bozeman. Not eligible are current members of the selection committee and previous winners of the award. This will be an individual award given to one person.

Selection Criteria

• Evidence of innovative and/or novel teaching practices that have been incorporated within the past three years.

• Relative comprehensiveness of scope: The innovation must have involved changes in the way a subject is taught.

• Measurable impact on teaching effectiveness, student success and/or retention.

• Potential or realized widespread use within or across disciplines.

• Innovative practices will be expected to be grounded in best practices of the college and university teaching professionand/or the particular discipline.

Nomination Materials

Students, faculty, administrators,and others who are knowledgeable about the individual’s teaching innovation are invited to submit nominations. Please provide a letter of nomination stating why you feel your nominee should receive this award along with at least one letter of support and current cv. Comments may be shared with the nominees. Students are especially encouraged to submit nominations.

Description

The Montana State University Award for Meritorious Technology/Science will be given to an MSU faculty member who has made one or more significant technological/scientific contributions. It is essential that the technology has the potential for transfer to the private sector, or has already been successfully transferred to the private sector, therefore, it is expected that an invention disclosure has been filed regarding the technology or that a patent for the technology has been filed/granted. Individuals who have been granted plant variety protection may also be considered for this
award.

1. Technological/scientific contribution that has the potential for transfer to the private sector or has already been successfully transferred to the private sector.
2. An invention disclosure or patent that has been filed/granted.

Nomination Materials Required

1. A nomination letter that clearly articulates the reasons the nominee should be recognized, including the importance of the technological/scientific advance(s) contributed by the nominee.
2. Two letters of support accompanying the letter of nomination. Support letters must describe the nature of the technological/scientific accomplishment(s), assess the originality of the contribution, and evaluate the realized or potential impact of the technology. It is strongly recommended that at least one of these letters of support be an external assessment of the technological/scientific advances(s) under consideration.
3. A current curriculum vitae of the nominee.
