Pre-University Studies

Pre-University Studies (Pre-US) is an advising and support program for students who do not meet the University's minimum admission requirements for freshmen. Pre-US students are not eligible to declare a major in their first semester. They may take a combination of courses through MSU and through Gallatin College’s Developmental Education program during their first semester. This means that they are MSU students, but they will work with their Advisor to choose some classes taught by MSU faculty and some classes taught by Gallatin College faculty.

Pre-US students can be full time in their first semester through a combination of math, writing, College Learning Strategies, and/or University Seminar (US) Core courses taught by Gallatin College, along with one or two Core, major, or elective courses through MSU.

A Pre-US student's schedule may consist of:

  1. COLS 103 College Learning Strategies
  2. Writing based on placement level
  3. Math based on placement level and major interest
  4. Core, Major class, or Elective
  5. Core, Major class, or Elective

This may change based on your conversations with your Advisor.

Students may transition out of Pre-University Studies after they have completed 7 MSU credits (in classes that are 100 level or higher – not including COLS 103 or other Gallatin College classes). Students may transfer into University Studies as an exploring student or declare a major of their choosing.
